When a debut filmmaker makes his or her first project about the woes of making a debut film, it's usually problematic. Not so for writer/director Ann Lu; her first film, "Dreamers," is about two young men trying to fulfill their dreams in Tinseltown, but fortunately Lu's story has more to do with the process of breaking away from traditional things than the goings-on of the Hollywood movie scene. When we first meet her lead characters, Ethan ("In and Out's" Mark Ballou) and Dave ("Never Been Kissed's" Jeremy Jordan), they're young boys living in the heartland with dreams of coming to Hollywood. When they finally make it they find out a simple truth--dreams don't always come true. Lu's film looks low-budget, which is it, and her script is sometimes clumsy, but there's something real in her work. Starring Mark Ballou, Jeremy Jordan, Courtney Gains, Portia Dawson, Ruth De Sosa, Camille Gaston, Brian Krause and Paul Bartel. Directed and written by Ann Lu. Produced by Artie Glackin. An American Anvil release. Drama. Unrated. Running time: 93 min.
