Mrs. Kalman ("The Impostors'" Isabella Rossellini) is as unsure about her new nanny, the wild, free-spirited Chaja ("Titus'" Laura Fraser), as Chaja is about her staunchly religious employer. The two women slowly become allies as Chaja develops a special relationship with one of the young children who does not speak. Chaja and Mrs. Kalman work together to help the little boy conquer his fears and gain the courage to talk. In doing so, they learn much about each other--and themselves.

First-time director Jeroen Krabbe's straightforward approach to "Left Luggage's" sensitive subject matter allows the audience to see the humanity of the characters and their struggles. He directs the actors to give simple and moving performances that foster the delicate storytelling of this emotional film. His own acting turn as the haunted Mr. Kalman is subtle yet passionate.    Starring Isabella Rossellini, Laura Fraser and Maximilian Schell. Directed by Jeroen Krabbe. Written by Edwin de Vries. Produced by Hans Pos, Dave Schram and Ate de Jong. A Castle Hill release. Drama. Unrated. Running time: 100 min.
