The Piano Tuner Of Earthquakes

The fabulous world of the Brothers Quay ( Street of Crocodiles ) comes to life but quickly expires in this lackluster film, more reminiscent of better work by the likes of Guy Maddin and David Lynch. The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes concerns a sensuous opera singer (Amira Casar), the crazed doctor (Gottfried John) who desires and abducts her and the innocent piano tuner (Cesar Sarachu) who stumbles upon the pair when he is hired to fix the doctor's odd musical automatons. It's unclear where the earthquakes come in.

While The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes is a handsomely mounted production and not an unintelligent one, it's also emotionally cold and too familiar by half -- a pale copy of Twilight of the Ice Nymphs with a flavorless soupcon of Eraserhead thrown in for good measure.
