White Chicks

on June 23, 2004 by Paul Clinton
Black FBI agents Kevin and Marcus (Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans) pose as white teen heiresses so they can infiltrate a kidnapping ring in the Hamptons. The two use prosthetic masks to take on the identities of the Wilson sisters, two obnoxious debutantes, for a weekend. Using the "Some Like It Hot" boilerplate, an army of writers reheat gender-bending slapstick with middling results.

Director Keenen Ivory Wayans ("Scary Movie") undercuts most of the jokes by greenlighting make-up that keeps us from suspending disbelief at nearly every turn. The scenes that do work best occur when the real Wilson sisters' friends, inexplicably duped by the cops' creepy cosmetics job, take them shopping. Lampooning women's obsession with beauty, the two try to squeeze themselves into clothes and shoes several sizes too small. But even this bit finishes on the shrill side. And in keeping with the movie's clear aim for a young audience, scatology and gross-out humor gets tossed into the mix. Starring Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. Written by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Andy McElfresh, Michael Anthony Snowden and Xavier Cook. Produced by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Rick Alvarez and Lee R. Mayes. A Columbia release. Comedy. Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and some drug content. Running time: 108 min
