A one-thought story concept has slacker man-child Randy Dupree moving in with his best friend, Carl Petersen (Matt Dillon), who has actually grown up and got married to Molly (Kate Hudson), his boss' daughter. Dupree's presence is annoying and disruptive, but not remotely convincing as a legitimate catalyst for exposing anything insightful, amusing or charming about modern relationships.
Added into the mix is Michael Douglas, channeling father Kirk more than ever, who clearly doesn't want his daughter to live happily ever after, at least not with some man other than himself. Dillon and Hudson as the beleaguered couple look attractive -- in contrast to Wilson -- and try hard to bring some definition and depth to paper-thin characters. They don't succeed. Wilson is just all over the place -- untidy, unfocused, at times bare-ass naked, and all the time unappealing. Starring Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon and Michael Douglas. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. Written by Mike LeSieur. Produced by Owen Wilson, Scott Stuber and Mary Parent. A Universal release. Comedy. Rated PG-13 for sexual content, brief nudity, crude humor, language and a drug reference. Running time: 108 min
