S. Darko DVD.jpgA brief postscript to yesterday's discussion of the, shall we say, disappointing sci-fi/fantasy thriller The Box, written and directed by Donnie Darko auteur Richard Kelly.

As you may recall, I noted in the review that The Box was such an incoherent mess that "it's hard not to wonder if the director's earlier film was the result of a deal with actual supernatural forces of the sort that may or may not be at the heart of the story here."

Perhaps as a result I received a Facebook message from occasional commenter Rob Lee:

"For another really awful movie, check out the sequel to Donnie Darko. Whose idea was that? Are they in prison? They should be."

I must confess, I was unfamiliar with said film, but according to a certain on-line encyclopedia with very little credibility, it does in fact exist. To wit:

"S. Darko is a 2009 film, directed by Chris Fisher. It stars Daveigh Chase, Briana Evigan, and Ed Westwick...The film was released straight-to-video on DVD and Blu-ray on May 12, 2009 in the US and on 6 July, 2009 in Europe."

The entry goes on at some length, but you'll have to take my word that there is no mention in it anywhere of any member of the creative team currently being incarcerated for any reason.

Which is not to say they shouldn't be. In fact, after viewing the trailer below, I'm thinking that reader Lee might very well have been on to something.

Two salient points probably need to be appended here.

1. None of the six S. Darko reviews indexed by Rotten Tomatoes were favorable, resulting in a score of 0%. This is interesting, obviously.

2. When asked about a sequel to the sequel, director Fisher replied:

"[S. Darko] needs to reach a new teen audience and it needs to satisfy the audience that already exists. If it does those two things then I think Fox might want to continue the franchise. If people keep seeing these movies then they'll keep making them. [My emphasis]

Ahem. In any case, you can order a disc of S. Darko here and sample its thousand sensitive beauties for yourself.

I should also add that there are 60 customer reviews of the film over at Amazon here. I'm assuming that there is someone, somewhere, who has actually taken the time to read them all; if such a person exists I would, on balance, like to meet him or her, although preferably in a highly public and well lit place with easy access to exits.
