X-Degrees of Separation, Part Deux

Well, nobody got it, but yes, there is (as we suggested yesterday) a genuine connection between The X-Files (if not, specifically, the forthcoming movie) and late great soul music icon Marvin Gaye. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear (1999) and the show's brilliant sixth season. Here's a clip from my second favorite episode, "The Unnatural," written and directed by series co-star David Duchovny.

The plot centers around an alien who comes to earth to play baseball, specifically in the old Negro League in 1947 (in Roswell, New Mexico no less), and who eventually becomes a big enough celebrity to be scouted by the majors. Said alien is played, brilliantly, by Jesse L. Martin, before he achieved stardom on Law and Order. Martin, meanwhile, is starring as -- you guessed it -- Marvin Gaye in the forthcoming biopic Sexual Healing, currently scheduled for 2010 release. Sopranos star James Gandolfini is in it too, although that has nothing really to do with anything.

Like I said, nobody got it, so a coveted Box Office No-Prize will not be awarded at this time. As I was writing the above, however, a reader informed me via e-mail of another Gaye connection; apparently "Let's Get It On" is heard at some point in some other X-Files episode. Rather than Google it to find out, I'm simply going to assume that this is true; as for the reader let me say that I would like to meet him someday, if not perhaps to shake his hand.
