Image of the Day: Memories of Underdevelopment

on September 09, 2010 by Steve Simels

From Top Secret! (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, 1984):  Creepy East German General Streck (Jeremy Kemp) demonstrates why the West's victory in the Cold War was a foregone conclusion.

In case you've never seen it, Top Secret! (which was the follow-up to Airplane!) is the ZAZ team's conceptual parodic masterpiece -- a cross between a classic Cold War thriller and one of Elvis Presley's sillier back lot musicals. Think Torn Curtain meets Harum Scarum, but with more great throwaway gags (see above) than you've had hot meals. And I'm not completely kidding about the masterpiece part -- I forget who said it, but it is nonetheless true: What a genuine shame it is that the real Elvis almost never got to be in a movie as good as this.
